A year after joining the Mellin Group came a new kind of Savemore: a city-centre store at Grosvenor House, Anlaby Road, that sold no food at all. Clifford called it a “variety store” — everything for the home, all at cut prices, and of special interest to newly-weds setting up house.
It was planned ahead of the end of resale price maintenance — the rules that let manufacturers fix shop prices. Mary, as co-director, gave much thought to its planning; “as a housewife she knows how important it is for a woman running a home to be able to buy reliable goods at the lowest possible price.”
The city’s new multi-storey car park was only a stone’s throw away.
