“The Savemore Story” — Port of Hull Journal
A seven-page feature written while Clifford and Mary were still running Savemore — the most detailed account of the business at its height, with photographs of the stall, every store, the warehouse and the founders, plus congratulatory adverts from Hull suppliers.
What it tells us
- The market stall began “a mere twelve years ago” — 1953
- The first Savemore Stores shop opened in June 1958, in half of a warehouse in Market Place
- George Street (the former Curzon Cinema, 1960) was “the first fully cut-price supermarket to be opened in the North of England”
- The Priory Supermarket (1962) was the largest supermarket in the city
- Savemore joined the Mellin Group in November 1963
- Doncaster, High Fishgate, opened on Friday 13 November 1964
- About 350 employees by January 1965; Mary Dunn was co-director
