While the stall was still trading, Clifford bought a warehouse in Market Place to hold his stock. In June 1958 he and Mary turned half of it into a shop — Savemore Stores, the first self-service shop in Hull.
Business boomed. Bit by bit the shop crept into the storage space until the whole warehouse had become a sales floor. It seemed palatial compared with the stall — but within two years it, too, was not big enough.
