“Film Facts — Kingston-upon-Hull” — Remembering the Old Cinemas of Hull

A book about Hull’s old cinemas. Its “Film Facts” table lists each cinema with its seats and its opening and closing dates, and so gives the exact life of the Curzon, the George Street cinema that the Dunns turned into a supermarket in 1960.

What it tells us

  • The Curzon, George Street, opened under that name on 26 December 1955 and closed on 9 January 1960
  • The Curzon’s entry reads “see Prince’s Hall”, the cinema’s earlier name. The Prince’s Hall entry is on a later page, not yet seen
  • Later in 1960 the building reopened as Savemore’s George Street supermarket (SSL-S01)
  • The same page lists two more George Street cinemas: the Criterion (5 August 1935 to 14 June 1969, earlier the Majestic) and the Dorchester (30 December 1935 to 25 June 1977)
  • SSL-0024 is a photograph of the Curzon, with a board announcing that the property has been sold
