Letter from Sydney Bernett, general merchant, Brixton
A London general merchant acknowledges Mr Dunn’s telephone order for shampoo sachets and, in the same letter, offers him 1,500 dozen pairs of nylons. An everyday glimpse of how Savemore’s shelves were stocked, and the first London supplier in the archive to be known by name.
What it tells us
- Dated 8 May 1963 by hand and addressed to “Mr Dunn, Savemore Stores Ltd., Hull”
- Mr Dunn had ordered shampoo sachets from Sydney Bernett by telephone
- Bernett offered 1,500 dozen “Perfect Seamless Nylons, all sizes”, in various named envelopes, at 27/- a dozen (2s 3d a pair), “as per samples”, to be sent with the shampoos
- A handwritten note at the foot reads “3 Samples. Non-Returnable.”
- The letterhead gives Bernett’s own lines as Christmas crackers, cards, novelties, paper and toys
- Ten years after the market stall began, Savemore was still buying from London, now by telephone and post
